Cyberattack on French Supermarkets Compromises Refrigeration and Destroys Stock
A cyberattack altered the refrigeration systems of hundreds of French supermarkets, causing temperatures to rise and rendering large quantities of fresh and frozen products unusable. The Intermarché and Cooperative U chains estimated that approximately 150–200 and nearly 100 stores, respectively, were affected, with some systems reportedly reaching temperatures of between 27 and 50 degrees. Danfoss, the manufacturer of the affected controllers, said the attackers had exploited a known vulnerability that had previously been used against U.S. Department of Defense food commissaries. According to the available information, the affected stores had not installed the necessary updates, turning a known flaw into an incident with immediate operational and material consequences. The case demonstrates how seemingly secondary OT devices and remote management systems can become an access point capable of compromising food safety, supply continuity, and retail prices.
