Binance Reconstructs the Theft of Over $6.3 Billion
Binance attributed the theft of approximately $6.3–$6.4 billion to a months-long campaign that began with fake job interviews targeting two engineers. The attackers allegedly combined social engineering, a tampered Homebrew installation, malware, stolen credentials, and the abuse of an internal AI tool to gain access to wallet-signing systems. Multiple observers linked the operation to North Korea, which denied any responsibility, and it echoes recruitment techniques previously used in thefts attributed to the Lazarus Group. The stolen tokens are visible on public blockchains and have been divided into smaller batches, a strategy that could take months to launder. The case shows that seemingly routine processes such as recruitment and development tools can become gateways to the most sensitive financial infrastructure.
