Most open-source AI projects still fail to reach production

Mozilla's latest State of Open Source AI report says that nearly half of open-source AI projects never make it into production. The main obstacles are no longer just model capability, but deployment, governance and the operational tooling needed to run systems safely at scale. That matters for organizations that assume open models automatically reduce risk or complexity. In practice, teams still need monitoring, controls, documentation and a security model around the deployment. The report also warns that without investment in that surrounding infrastructure, the market could drift toward more closed and restrictive AI ecosystems. For CISOs and technology leaders, the message is that open source changes the ownership of the problem, not the need for governance.
